Lag B’Omer 2013 Videos

Shalom Y’All:

Last night and today religious Jews celebrated Lag B’Omer, a day of happiness commemorating both the temporary cessation of the plague that killed 24,000 of Rabbi Akiva’s students and the death of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Bonfires are traditionally lit the night of Lag B’Omer to commemorate the mystical light brought into the world with Rabbi Shimon’s teachings,  especially the day he died, when he revealed the wisdom of the Zohar, the foundation of Kabbalah, to his students.

The largest Lag B’Omer celebration takes place in and around the city of Meron in Northern Israel where Rabbi Shimon’s tomb is located. Tens of thousands attend the celebration which includes around the clock singing and dancing.

Religious parents who do not cut their son’s hair until the age of three, often give their son his first haircut on Lag B’Omer in Meron.

Here are the two videos showing the festivities:

The first one is a short video of a bonfire in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.

The next one is a a video of the Lag B’Omer celebration in Meron, courtesy of YouTube. It’s poor quality, but gives an idea of what goes on there.

Mother’s Day Shirts and Gifts

Shalom:

This year Mother’s Day is on  Sunday, May 12. That’s less than three weeks from now.

In 1908, Anna Jarvis celebrated the first  Mother’s Day in America when she held a memorial service for her mother. She pushed to have Mother’s Day made a national holiday and succeeded in 1914. It is now celebrated by many countries throughout the world, but the date chosen often coincides with other celebrations in that country honoring motherhood.

Of course, every day should be Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. But since retailers have commercialized the concept, everyone’s joined in the celebration.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Shalom:

Hope all of you had a great Passover!

Holocaust Remembrance Day begins this Sunday night, May 7 and ends Monday evening. Many communities will have Holocaust Remembrance events  and we strongly urge you to attend an event.

As the number of people who experienced the Holocaust first hand diminishes, it is of the utmost importance that we keep the memory of that horrid period alive so that we can rebut the Holocaust deniers and teach our children about the courage and strength displayed by our people.

I was fortunate to be able to attend an event at Temple Emanuel In New York CIty, a beautiful Reform Synagogue.  Co-sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Warsaw Ghetto Resistance Organization, and the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants, the event was attended by about 2000 people.

Speakers included: Hanne Liebmann, a Holocaust Survivor, His Excellency Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel In New York, Merav Michaeli, a Knesset Member  and Senator Charles E. Schumer, one of the two US Senators for New York. Notably absent was Mike Bloomberg, Mayor of New York.

HaZamir, the International High School Choir,  sang two songs and Cantor Joseph Malovany sang a few songs and movingly chanted the Memorial Prayer for the Dead recited at the end of the Yizkor Services.

Thirty six candles were prepared to be lit by Holocaust survivors, but unfortunately, there were not enough survivors present to light all the candles.
